Chatham EDC Celebrates a Banner Year
November 7, 2012
Since 2009, the Chatham Economic Development Corporation has held an annual event called Opportunity Chatham. This year’s event was October 19 at the Central Carolina Business Campus in Siler City. We call our annual meeting Opportunity Chatham because we believe that economic development, at its core, is about creating and nurturing opportunity.
In all of our efforts – attraction, retention and expansion, and entrepreneurship – we work to show businesses that Chatham County is a place to grow and prosper. Our efforts help create jobs for families to build wealth in Chatham and encourage companies to invest in land, buildings, equipment, and more to grow the commercial tax base.
This past fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2012, we assisted 120 businesses, compared to 78 in the previous year and 51 the year before that. These 120 businesses created 491 new jobs and invested $117.15 million – up from $19 million the previous year and $1 million in fiscal year 2010. These clients occupied more than 745,000 square feet of previously vacant space.
We’re proud of our accomplishments last year and hope to continue the upward trend this year. We’re off to a good start. For the first quarter of the current fiscal year, July 1 – September 30, announced new capital investment totals $12.8 million. These projects will create more than 320 jobs and absorb another 230,00 square feet of vacant and underutilized commercial space.
We’re thankful to have a dedicated staff and board of directors, public and private investors, elected officials, businesses, non-profits, educators, and engaged residents who all recognize the Opportunity in Chatham and are committed to a better tomorrow.
