East Coast Drag Time
It began as an informal backyard barbeque among a handful of drag racers. The racing camaraderie, stories and fun of that day quickly developed into a hugely popular assembly of the east coast’s best known drag racers. Now the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame event has grown into one of the nation’s largest gatherings for drag racing cars, muscle cars, street rods, antiques and those who them. Now in its 12th year, the event literally consumes the historic city of Henderson, NC, filling its streets with the rumble of high horsepower engines.
Come October 18, 19 and 20, 2013, the 12th Annual East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame Reunion will occupy Henderson, NC, with a tribute to horsepower, sparkling paint, chrome and the eternal love that Americans hold for automobiles.
The event kicks-off Friday, October 18, 2013, with the “Show, Shine, Shag and Drag” barbeque for car show entries and Hall of Fame members and inductees. It’s held at Satterwhite Point, at Kerr Lake, I-85, Exit 217, Henderson, NC one of the southeast’s premier fishing and recreational facilities, and is presented by the Vance County Tourism Department. Participants will gather from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm to enjoy a traditional North Carolina, southern style, barbeque and friendly get-together with performance and racing car enthusiasts. (There’s a $10 per plate charge for diners.) That same evening, the streets of Henderson will find a city-wide cruise night, with receptions hosted by event host hotels; Hampton Inn; Holiday inn Express; Baymont Inn & Suites and Sleep In, all conveniently located just off I-85, at Exit 212, Henderson, NC.
Saturday, October 19, 2013 is the annual Show & Shine car show for cars 1976 or older. Last year the number of entries approached 1,500, and pre-entries for the 2013 edition already predict an even larger field of entries in all classes! Included will be one of the east coast’s largest and most historically significant collections of drag race cars, and many of the drivers, crewmen and owners who ran these cars “in the day”! Also included are muscle cars, street rods and performance cars of all sorts, as the entire downtown area of Henderson become one gigantic, car enthusiast’s walk-through mall. Entries will be judged and trophies awarded in all classes, and the first 400 entries will receive a dash plaque just for entering.
On Sunday, October 20, 2013, the 12th Annual East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame will add selected names to its star-studded gallery of past inductees. This year’s Class of 2013 will be honored before their fellow racers, friends and families beginning at 10:00 am at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center, I-85, Exit 209, just south of Henderson, NC. Among those in attendance this year will be special guest, Hall of Fame member Hubert Platt. Another treat for Hall of Fame attendees will be the extraordinary wit and drag wisdom of Bret Kepner. Bret returns to serve as Master of Ceremonies, bringing his amazing wealth of drag racing knowledge and trivia that is guaranteed to entertain and bring back memories of drag racing “in the day”.
Sunday’s festivities begin with racers bringing their own scrap books, photos and other racing memorabilia for display and viewing by all. At 12:30 pm the Hall of Fame Class of 2013 marches into the Civic Center for the ceremonies that will honor their achievements and contributions to the sport of drag racing. Afterwards a gathering of fans, friends and families will offer personal congratulations to the 2013 Hall of Fame inductees.
