Smart Energy…Smart Transportation…Smart Water…

Christa Wagner VinsonRegular Triangle Chatter readers will be aware of our frequent praise for the 2011 Duke University Center for Globalization, Governance and Competitive report, Smart Grid: Core Firms in the Research Triangle Region, NC, for helping put this region on the global cleantech map.  The report identified over 60 smart grid companies and more than 100 company locations in the Research Triangle Region, helped clarify the technology categories these companies fit into, and described the supporting institutions that make the region host to a real smart grid cluster.

Research Triangle Cleantech ClusterThe report garnered international media attention, introduced the regional economic development community to dozens of new companies not named in the study, and became a catalyst for creating the Research Triangle Regional Partnership’s newest program, the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC).

On Thursday of last week, the RTCC announced plans to take that report a step further with new research the Cluster commissioned from RTI International that will take stock of the region’s assets in smart water and smart transportation.

We’re as excited as our neighbors about the new report…

…and we are charged up by the promise of expanding this region’s pipeline of technology, entrepreneurship and talent.

Also last week, we had the good fortune of meeting one of the cleantech sector’s experts, Dallas Kachan, principal of cleantech research and consulting firm Kachan & Co., and publisher of a cleantech taxonomy that's internationally recognized.

Our smart water, smart transportation and smart energy focus areas fit within the Kachan matrix, where cleantech is defined as “a diverse range of products, services, and processes, all intended to provide superior performance at lower costs, while reducing or eliminating negative ecological impact, and, at the same time, making more efficient and responsible use of natural resources.”
