Duke University and its precursors have been educating North Carolinians since 1838. Located in Durham, Duke has been regarded as one of the Research Triangle Region's most valuable assets. Duke is known for the quality of its faculty as well as its academic and research programs. However, Duke's size enables it to offer the atmosphere of a small college with the educational resources of a major research university. Duke offers 43 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate or professional degrees in law, divinity, medicine, nursing, engineering, environmental studies and business. Duke also provides the unique experience of acquiring a Top 5 U.S. MBA degree in Europe with the Duke MBA-Cross Continent program offered by the Fuqua School of Business Europe. In 1999, this school was opened in Frankfurt, Germany with courses starting in August of 2000 that helped students go to school and get their MBA degree as well as continue in their current occupation.
Duke is recognized not only as a leader in higher education but as an internationally known center for medicine. Its medical center features clinical and training programs as well as research programs. Many of Duke's faculty members have been cited for excellence in teaching and providing outstanding published works and literary articles.
While proud of its North Carolina roots, Duke is also proud of its diversity. Duke draws its students from all 50 states and more than 70 foreign countries. Both students and members of the standing faculty act as consultants to government, industry, foundations, and the Research Triangle Park companies in their respective fields. Duke offers the William R. Perkins Library, with more than 8 million manuscripts; the Duke Forest, a 7,900-acre natural laboratory adjoining the campus; the Primate Center, the world's only university-based facility for the student of primate anatomy, behavior and history; and the Duke University Marine Laboratory, located on the North Carolina coast.
The gothic architecture of the campus lends an air of scholarly antiquity to Duke. However, its modern labs, faculty, relationship with the Research Triangle Park, and leading-edge research programs are all prime indicators that Duke is pointed toward the 22nd century.
Graduate Program RankingsU.S. News and World Report in its March 2002 ranking of "America's Best Graduate Schools" gave high marks to several of Duke's graduate programs:
