Progress Energy, Duke Power Co., ElectriCities of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation provide electricity in the Research Triangle Region. Both ElectriCities of North Carolina and the NC Electric Membership Corporation are cooperative umbrella organizations for smaller providers of electricity. Electric rates vary from company to company and depend upon the level of electricity demands, and whether an enterprise can vary the time of day of its energy demands. For information about the best rate for specific electricity needs, the local utility should be contacted. Information on the largest providers is given below.

Since its founding in 1908, CP&L has evolved from a mid-sized North Carolina electric utility into a key component of a Fortune 500 company providing energy and related services to one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States.

Serving more than 1.2 million electricity customers, CP&L is one of the largest and most reliable utility companies in the Southeast. A subsidiary of Progress Energy, CP&L's service territory encompasses over 33,000 square miles serving customers in North Carolina and South Carolina.

CP&L is responsible for operating 19 plant sites in the Carolinas, totaling more than 12,000 megawatts of generating capability. CP&L's generation fuel mix includes coal, nuclear, natural gas/oil and hydroelectric plants.

The Carolinas are one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. In 2000, CP&L added more than 33,000 new customers to its system and the company anticipates continued strong customer growth throughout the next decade.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Duke Power is one of the nation's largest investor-owned electric utilities, serving 2 million customers in a 22,000 square mile area of the Carolinas. Duke Power operates three nuclear generating stations, eight coal-fired stations, thirty-one hydroelectric stations and numerous combustion turbine units.

For nearly 100 years, Duke Power has provided safe, reliable, competitively priced electricity and outstanding customer service. Duke Power has also been honored and received the prestigious Edison Award as the # 1 power company three times.

Electric Rate Options:

A variety of electric rate options are available to both new and expanding customers.

The following rates apply to manufacturing and non-manufacturing projects.

  • Manufacturing Rate Options - Industrial customers can be served from one of several available rate options.
    1. Industrial Service-Schedule I (This is for manufacturing industries, which means that more then 50% of the electric usage is for the manufacturing processes.)
    2. Optional Power Service, Time-of-use - Schedule OPT (This is for all general service and industrial service customers. Charges vary on this schedule, depending upon the time of day, day of week and season.)

  • Non-Manufacturing Rate Options - Commercial customers can be served from one of several available rate options.
    1. General Service - Schedule G (This is for commercial customers who do not qualify for a residential or industrial rate schedule.)
    2. General Service, All Electric - Schedule GA (This is for commercial customers who do not qualify for a residential or industrial rate schedule and requires environmental space conditioning which must be supplied electrically, and through the same meter, as all other electric energy used in the establishment.)
    3. Optional Power Service, Time-of-Use - Schedule OPT (This is for all general service and industrial service customers. Charges vary on this schedule, depending on the time of day, day of week and season.)

    For new and existing companies that grow their business in the Duke Power service area, an economic development incentive rider is available.

  • Growth/Incentives Option - Rider EC [Economic Development (EC) is available to customers on G, GA, I, or OPT who are not classified as retail trade or public administration. To qualify for this rider, the customer must sing a new 10-year contract with some qualifying circumstances.]

  • Innovative Rate Option - Marginal Cost Rates-Schedule HP - [Hourly Pricing (hp) for incremental load is available to limited non-residential customers. This schedule provides a customer with hourly prices, which reflect the company's generation costs.

ElectriCities is a non-profit government service organization representing cities, towns and universities that own electric distribution systems. Today, ElectriCities represents 98 members in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Formed back in 1965 to protect the interests of public power customers, and to provide a unified voice to speak out in the North Carolina legislature, ElectriCities continues today to serve public power communities.

ElectriCities provides customer service and safety training, emergency and technical assistance, communications, government affairs and legal services. Through consolidation of these services, members save their customers the expense of administering these functions locally.

ElectriCities provides power to the following municipalities within the Research Triangle Region: Apex (Wake County), Benson (Johnston County), Clayton (Johnston County), Louisburg (Franklin County), Selma (Johnston County), Smithfield (Johnston County), and Wake Forest (Wake County). It also provides power to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Orange County).

The North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation consists of family of corporations formed to support the state's 27 electric cooperatives. Together, these organizations serve more than 2.4 million North Carolinians, which live in 58% of the state's land area. The North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation provides power to the following electric cooperatives within the Research Triangle Region: Central Electric Membership (Sanford, Lee County), Piedmont Electric Membership (Hillsborough, Orange County), South River Electric Membership (Dunn, Harnett County), and Wake Electric Membership (Wake Forest, Wake County).
