Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ)

Foreign Trade Zones were created (in 1934) in the United States to provide special customs procedures to U. S. companies engaged in international trade-related activities. These procedures are aimed to offset customs advantages available to overseas producers competing with domestic industry. The U.S. FTZ Board and Triangle J Council of Governments, Grantee of FTZ #93, require that zone activities result in significant public benefit and a net positive economic effect. The intent of FTZ #93 is to stimulate international trade in the Greater Triangle Region and thereby create new jobs in companies engaged in international trade, as well as encourage job creation in spin-offs industries.

A Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) is a neutral, secured area in a port of entry that is legally outside of the U.S. Customs territory. Domestic and foreign merchandise may enter this enclave without a formal customs entry. Goods entering the Zone may be sorted, manipulated, used in manufacturing, inspected, combined with other domestic or foreign materials, displayed for sale, and re-exported without payment of duty. If the final product is exported from the U.S., no U.S. customs duty or excise tax is levied. If the final product is imported into the U.S., customs duty and excise taxes are due only at the time of transfer from the foreign trade zone into U.S. commerce. Spoiled, damaged or waste goods may be disposed of or re-exported without payment of duty.

For businesses and manufacturers that export or import, the Research Triangle Region offers the full service, multi-site Foreign Trade Zone #93. FTZ #93 is a general-purpose foreign trade zone operated by Longistics International. The Zone offers facilities for storing, assembling, manufacturing and displaying merchandise. Longistics International has the ability to expand its FTZ operations to other, approved locations including a company's own plant site. Longistics offers secure, customs bonded space for storage of products. The FTZ #93 headquarters (Site 1A) is at 10900 World Trade Boulevard near Raleigh-Durham International Airport and I-540, an 85-acre campus that includes eight to ten buildings with over 70,000 square feet. FTZ #93 Site 2 is located at 5604 Departure Drive in north Raleigh and is fully utilized by Dudson China, USA. A new FTZ Site #3 is available for development in the 240-acre Holly Springs Business Park.
