Highways
North Carolina has the largest state-maintained highway system in the nation, with 80,000 miles of highways. Three Interstate highways intersect the Research Triangle Region, giving the area excellent access to many East Coast destinations. In fact, the Research Triangle Region is within two days' trucking distance of over 60% of the U.S. population.

The six-lane east-west Interstate Highway 40 bisects the Research Triangle Park. I-40 now runs coast-to-coast from North Carolina to California. North-South Interstate Highway 85 passes through Orange, Durham, Granville, Vance and Warren Counties. I-85 forms the backbone of the largest manufacturing region in the Southeast, reaching from Richmond to Atlanta. It is also knows as the I-85 corridor that connects North Carolina with distribution, warehousing and information technology. North-South Interstate Highway 95 runs through Harnett and Johnston County in the Region. I-95 is 30 minutes east of Raleigh, where it intersects I-40. I-95 is the major East Coast interstate, linking New England to Florida. NC Department of Transportation have completed I-440 (Inner & Outer belt line) and are continuing to work on I-540, "Raleigh's Outer Loop", eventually looping the city of Raleigh both on the north and south sides.
