The Research Triangle Region provides employment for 95.9% of its citizens who seek work. Over the past decade, the region's unemployment rate has been below the state and national rates. Orange County had the 2nd lowest unemployment rate of any county in the state at 2.2%. The stable employment base, anchored by universities, medical centers and government, has resulted in unemployment trends that have smoother peaks and valleys than the state and national rates. During 2001 the region's labor force totaled 812,870. The number of employed persons totaled 779,930.
