Other Colleges and Universities

In addition to the Research Triangle Region's three major doctoral research universities, the area features additional institutions of higher learning. These institutions offer degrees ranging from associate and bachelor degrees to master and doctoral programs and contribute to the quality of education in the Research Triangle Region. Campbell University Campbell University is a Baptist University affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Campbell's present standing is among the state's largest church-related senior universities and occupies an 850-acre campus in Buies Creek. James Archibald Campbell, a North Carolina preacher who believed that no student should be denied admission because of the lack of funds, founded it in January of 1887. Originally known as Buies Creek Academy, the school began with twenty-one students and has grown to over 3,490 today. In 1925, the school was deeded to the N.C. Baptist State Convention. In 1961, the college became a senior college and it changed its name to Campbell University in 1976. The Campbell University School of Law was established in 1976 and the Lundy Fetterman School of Business in 1983. The Schools of Pharmacy and Education were added in 1985. The graduate programs began in 1977 with the Master of Education degree. The Master of Business Administration degree was added in 1978 and the Master of Science in Government was established in 1982. It traces its heritage to the first charter of the Franklin Academy in 1787. The college evolved from Franklin Male Academy, Louisburg Female Academy and Louisburg Female College. At the beginning of the 20th century, the institution became known as Louisburg College. The College's academic programs provide a variety of choices for the transfer and two-year student. Fields of study include Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Business Curricula, weekend/evening college and special programs. Roughly 501 students are currently attending Louisburg College. The college helps make the transition between high school and the senior institution of your choice. Being a student at Louisburg College, you will be better prepared to enter and succeed at a larger institution, and classes in your major will be smaller and taught by experienced professors. Meredith is a place where diverse groups of women unite to learn and prepare for their futures. Meredith College was founded by Thomas Meredith when his idea in 1838 called for the establishment of a "female seminary of high order." This seminary was named the Baptist Female University, whose name was changed in 1909 to Meredith College. Meredith is the largest private four-year women's college in the Southeast, and offers degrees at the bachelor and master level while serving 2,432 undergraduates and 163 graduates. The university has a strong liberal arts tradition with a commitment to diverse educational and cultural environment. NCCU was chartered in 1909 and opened its doors in 1910. NCCU is one of the 16 senior institutions comprising the University of North Carolina, the state's tax-supported university system. NCCU serves its more than 5,441 undergraduate and graduate students through the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Law, and the School of Library and Information Sciences. In addition to its regular offerings, NCCU has a large selection of courses in the evening with a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees available to students who attend evening courses only. NCCU's campus is more than 100 acres, beautifully landscaped through sloping hills and green valleys. The buildings are a mixture of modern and modified Georgian structures. Peace offers the Associate of Arts, Associate of Fine Arts in Music, Associate of Science, and the Bachelor of Arts degrees in Biology, Business Management, Communications, English, Human Resources, Leadership Studies, Liberal Studies, Music, Psychology, Spanish, and Visual Communications. Located on 8-acres of historic downtown Raleigh, Peace is situated in the State's political, educational and cultural center that offers many internship opportunities for young women. Currently, there are 603 women attending Peace College and is one of two women's colleges in the Southeast that offer both associate and baccalaureate degree programs. Peace College is a member of the Women's College Coalition. Founded in Raleigh in 1867 to educate free slaves, the mission of St. Augustine's College has grown with diversification of its once predominant African-American heritage to one that is multi-national and multi-racial. St. Augustine's College was first awarded its baccalaureate degrees in 1931. St. Augustine's College offers two Bachelor degrees in either Arts or Science (36 different majors). Shaw is firmly committed to providing educational opportunities for all segments of society but has been a particular pacesetter in developing programs to serve the needs to Afro-Americans. Shaw University all levels of education including thirteen departments offering 29 majors leading to the bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree, three degree programs leading to the associate of arts degree, and one master's degree program in divinity. The Center for Alternative Programs of Education (CAPE) allows students in nine cities across North Carolina the opportunity to pursue an academic degree through flexible course scheduling, independent study, and credit for prior learning experiences. Shaw University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate, bachelor's and master's degrees. Three of its academic programs have national accreditation including the Shaw Divinity School, the kinesiotherapy program, and the teacher education program. Approximately 2,527 students from the United States, the Caribbean, African countries and the Middle East attend Shaw University. The Convention purchased the campus of Wake Forest College (now Wake Forest University) in Wake Forest, NC recognizing it as the most beautiful place in the South. This campus original heritage dates back to 1832 when the property was originally obtained by the Baptists of North Carolina in order to build a college for educating ministers. The Seminary is known for the beautiful Wake Forest Baptist Church, organized in 1835, which sits within the campus enclosure. The Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and also the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This Seminary theological training and educational preparation for ministry is one of the best in the nation and provides studies ranging from undergraduate to post-graduate degrees. The school offers the Master of Divinity degree as a first professional degree for Christian ministers while also offering several related Master of Arts programs. The Bachelor of Arts is available to undergraduates entering into Biblical and ministerial studies. Post-graduate degrees are also offered in the Doctor of Ministry program as well as two advanced research degrees in Master of Theology and Doctor of Philosophy. Extension centers serve students in Charlotte, NC; Norfolk, VA; and Augusta, GA. The Seminary is ranked as the sixth largest seminary in the nation with an enrollment of 1,858.
