North Carolina Ports

The numbers are impressive. From Morehead City to the Mountains, North Carolina's Ports significantly impact the economic vitality of our entire state. Equally impressive is the fact that the operations of the state ports are entirely self-supporting. Businesslike management, smart and aggressive marketing and a steadfast devotion to customer satisfaction has allowed our Ports to hold their own against the well-financed ports to our north and south. The opportunities anticipated as we enter the next century require even greater commitments, especially a revitalized partnership with the state of North Carolina. The North Carolina Ports has generated over $300 million in tax revenues and 80,000 jobs statewide with $70 million in tax revenues and 19,715 jobs coming within the Research Triangle Region.

Exporters who use the North Carolina ports at Morehead City and Wilmington, and who are subject to payment of North Carolina income taxes, can apply and qualify for a tax credit. This tax credit can be earned on cargo wharfage and handling fees exceeding the average for the last three years inclusive of the current tax year. The excess of those fees for wharfage and handling paid directly or indirectly to the North Carolina State Ports Authority can be credited against the taxes due the state, up to 50% of the total tax liability for each tax year. The maximum cumulative credit that may be taken may not exceed $1 million. Any unused credit may be carried forward for the succeeding five years.
