Freight Railway Service

North Carolina provides four thousand miles of tracks with twenty crisscrosses to provide excellent freight railway service to business and industry. The North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division provides rail access that is vital to many prospective industries. This benefit is in result of the rail industrial access program that helps ensure that companies have the railroad tracks needed to transport freight and materials. The program uses state funds to construct or refurbish tracks required by a new or expanded industry to encourage economic development. Funding for the projects is contingent upon private and local sources providing matching funds. The two biggest railway providers in the Research Triangle Region are CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Corporation. Also, other smaller railway companies have home in the Region.
