Regional Community
Unlike many metro areas, the Research Triangle Region does not have a dominant central city. Instead, the region is a "community of communities," with four mid-sized cities (Raleigh, Durham, Cary & Chapel Hill) and 59 smaller cities and towns. The Region enjoys the distinctiveness of individual communities with the amenities of a major metro area and urban centers nearby. The Research Triangle Region's MSA that consists of 6 counties (Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Johnston, Orange & Wake) make up the 41st largest MSA in the United States. However, the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, MSA was the 12th highest growing MSA in the country tied with Atlanta at 38.9% growth.
