The
Research Triangle Region's metropolitan area has the second lowest violent
crime rate among North Carolina's five metro areas with populations over
250,000. The region's metro area's overall crime rate for both violent and
property crimes was also second lowest among the five largest North Carolina
metro areas.
The Crime
Index is composed of selected offenses used to gauge fluctuations in the
overall volume and rate of crime reported to law enforcement officials. This
is the total count of offenses reported.

Crime Rates
A total
of seven major offenses were used to measure the extent, fluctuation and
distribution of crime. The classifications used in the index are: murder,
forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor
vehicle theft. The crime index is the sum of violent crimes and property
crimes, divided by the total population.
