The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the nation's first state university. Since it's founding in 1793, UNC-CH has been nationally known for its achievements in teaching, research and public service.
UNC-CH's student body of 22,430 studies in 13 colleges and schools representing 54 major fields. Carolina offers academic programs leading to 77 bachelor's, 81master's-level programs and 60 doctoral-level programs, as well as professional degrees in dentistry, education, government, information and library science, journalism and mass communication, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work. Also within Chapel Hill is UNC-Hospitals, including North Carolina Memorial Hospital, the state's principal referral, and diagnostic and treatment center. Nearly three dozen libraries, located in over a score of sites, support the University's academic and professional programs. Campus libraries have more than three hundred staff, and their combined holdings exceed 5 million volumes, 4 million microforms, 2 million printed government publications, 16 million manuscripts, hundreds of thousands of audiovisuals, maps and photographs, and thousands of electronic titles. In terms of subject scope, campus libraries cover most areas of the fine arts, biomedical and physical sciences, humanities, law, and social sciences.
The student body boasts the highest graduation rates in the University of North Carolina system. The university awards the world-famous Morehead scholars programs and has produced 33 Rhodes scholars since the program began in 1902, including the first black woman.
UNC-CH's outstanding faculty of 2,309 includes many who hold major positions in virtually every national scholarly or professional association. Overall, nearly 94% have earned the highest degree in their field with a faculty/student ratio being 1/14.
UNC-CH is located in the heart of the town of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 48,715 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of more than 1.5 million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham, Raleigh and Cary, and the Research Triangle Park.
