Architectural and Design Services Firm O'Brien/Atkins Joins Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster
October 31, 2013
“O’Brien/Atkins and its chairman and CEO John Atkins have been at the forefront of every major economic development initiative in this region for more than 25 years,” said Lee Anne Nance, RTCC managing director and executive vice president of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership, which created and manages the RTCC. “The cleantech cluster will benefit enormously from the company’s deep understanding of what it takes for a region to compete globally for jobs and investment as well as its expertise in design and sustainable development.”
O’Brien/Atkins specializes in designing corporate technology and advanced manufacturing campuses, which include offices, labs, high-tech/sci-tech facilities, as well as higher education and large public projects. The firm has designed campus master plans for many of the region’s corporate icons, such as Biogen Idec, Cisco, Eisai Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline, along with many of their buildings, said Jim Nichols, business development leader.
The company’s sweet spot is sustainable design, with virtually all of its architects and engineers LEED Accredited Professionals and its buildings recognized with all levels of LEED certification (Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum).
“The cleantech cluster is a natural fit for us,” Nichols said. “As we design energy-efficient buildings and campuses, we integrate technologies that help our clients save money on energy and reduce their water and energy consumption. Many of those technologies are developed by cleantech companies right here in this region.”
RTCC membership will help the company stay on top of the technology innovations developed by regional companies as well as participate in deploying them in demonstration projects, he said.
“This will increase our company’s value to clients, generate business for local cleantech companies and help our region become globally known as the destination for cleantech innovation,” Nichols said.
RTCC’s fall membership recruiting campaign continues. Anyone working in the cleantech economy can participate in the cluster network at no cost. Paying members receive greater access to global market leaders and opportunities to leverage the RTCC collaboration to expand their business. They also help RTCC develop solutions to industry challenges, such as talent recruitment, workforce development and policies that impact business growth.
