Biogen Idec Expands Footprint in RTP

Research Triangle Park, N.C. --  Biogen Idec (Nasdaq: BIIB) broke ground April 28 on a 180,000-square-foot office building. The new building will allow for consolidation of patient services and administrative offices.

The expansion of its facilities in The Research Triangle Park (RTP) will allow Biogen to expand its staff and also grow its research and manufacturing capabilities for its pipeline of biotech drugs and for its corporate partners, says Biogen spokesman Mike McBrierty.

The building will be registered for silver-level LEED certification, McBrierty says, making it the second building in the company’s portfolio under consideration for LEED recognition.

Biogen Idec employs about 850 people in the Research Triangle Region. Its new building will have two wings: one with five floors of office space and one featuring a new cafeteria, conference rooms and auditorium.

The expansion will allow the company to move 275 people employed with its patient services group, ow working in leased office space in Durham, back to the Biogen campus. It will also ease overcrowding of the company’s office and laboratory buildings on the main campus. Biogen expects to move those employees into the new building by the third quarter of 2012.

Once administration personnel are relocated, the newly vacated space will be renovated and converted into research laboratory space to support Biogen Idec’s manufacturing operations in RTP, McBrierty says.
