Magneti Marelli $15M Expansion to Add 65 Jobs in Sanford
SANFORD, N.C. (January 4, 2011) - Magneti Marelli Powertrain Systems USA is expanding its current operation in Sanford, adding high-tech equipment and about 65 jobs by the end of this year to produce three new fuel systems for Chrysler cars.
The company is part of Magneti Marelli Holding S.p.A., an international group based in Italy that designs and produces high-tech engine and transmission component systems for the auto industry.
Magneti Marelli's $15 million local expansion will include improvements to its 250,000-square-foot facility on Nash Street, three new production lines and millions of dollars in high-tech machinery.
Director of Manufacturing Terry Russell says jobs will be added in all areas of production - die-casting, machining, plastic molding and assembly - as well as support areas, including maintenance, logistics and engineering.
This project could have gone to another domestic location, one of our other global plants or to a competitor, says Russell. But Sanford was able to demonstrate a competitive advantage over other facilities both inside and outside our company.
Russell says receiving the project was a credit to Magneti Marelli employees' dedication to continuous operational improvement and to local leaders who worked with his company to make expansion possible.
Opened in 1976, Magneti Marelli's Sanford plant currently employs about 290 people. Using its World Class Manufacturing system, the company manufactures fuel systems primarily for cars, but also for motorcycles and other motor sport vehicles.
Bob Heuts, director for Lee County Economic Development, welcomed the news and believes the expansion is good for the entire region.
Most importantly, one of the world's great companies is expanding its presence in Sanford, which is extremely good news for everyone, he says. But it also sends a clear message that Lee County is the kind of place where manufacturing and businesses of all kinds can still thrive, and we hope that will attract even more.
