Novozymes Completes Expansion of U.S. Pilot Plant
New plant creates jobs, increases ability to develop cutting-edge technology for U.S. expanding biofuel industry
Franklinton, N.C. (January 26, 2012) -- Novozymes, a world leader in bio innovation, today opened a newly-expanded pilot plant at its North American headquarters in Franklinton, North Carolina. The plant will make enzymes necessary to turn biomass into biofuels to support its production facility in Franklinton as well as its new plant in Blair, Nebraska.
“Americans want more choices at the pump—and ones that are more affordable. This plant is in the business of finding scientific solutions to that challenge,” said Adam Monroe, President of Novozymes North America. “Our new facility will further support the development of advanced biofuels, an industry that is creating jobs and contributing to America’s energy and economic security.”
Construction of the plant began in August 2011. U.S. a global leader in biofuel innovation.
The U.S. is the world’s largest producer of biofuels. The Energy Information Agency projects that the U.S. biofuels industry produced nearly 14 billion gallons in 2011, its largest supply ever. Currently, 10 percent of the domestic fuel supply is provided by biofuels—an amount larger than the current U.S. oil import from Saudi Arabia.
The U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is helping drive the growth of the industry. The RFS calls for increasing amounts of renewable fuel up to 36 billion gallons to be sold by the year 2022. Of that total, 16 billion gallons are expected to come from cellulosic biofuels, a fuel that Novozymes helps enable with its enzymes.
Novozymes is collaborating with partners in the U.S., Europe, China, Brazil and India to continue research, development and commercialization of advanced biofuels. Many of the company’s more than 150 research scientists working on this project are based at its North American headquarters outside of Raleigh, N.C.
