Success Story: Talecris Biotherapeutics

November 13, 2009

“We’ve found that the work force, the quality of life, the education, the ability to train and get good workers has really been integral to our success.”

When Talecris Biotherapeutics announced it would undertake a major expansion of its Research Triangle Region manufacturing plant, it reflected a thoughtful decision to remain in a region that has served the company well.

Other regions and states covet such industry-leading life science innovators and offer attractive incentives to do so.

But in the end, the Research Triangle Region’s competitive assets and community partnerships were too high a hurdle for others to overcome, says Dan Menichella, Talecris’s senior vice president of business development

“We found that the work force, the quality of life, the education, the ability to train and get good workers has really been integral to our success,” Menichella says.

Headquartered in The Research Triangle Park, Talecris creates therapeutics from human plasma to treat patients with life-threatening, often debilitating types of diseases. It collects plasma in collection centers across the country and turns it into therapeutics at its manufacturing facility in Johnston County. Talecris conducts R&D at its RTP headquarters and a lab in Raleigh. Its products are distributed to customers in 80 countries around the world.

A homegrown success story (Talecris spun out of Bayer in 2005), it is part of the Research Triangle Region’s world-leading advanced medical care cluster, which is revolutionizing health care locally and globally through scientific research, rapid translation of breakthrough discoveries and world-class medical care centers.

“When you have successful companies in a region,” Menichella says, “that tends to breed more success.”
