RTI Identifies Cluster Networks to Shape the
Research Triangle Region's Competitive Future
RESEARCH TRIANGLE REGION, N.C. - RTI International will help the Research Triangle Region's Future Cluster Competitiveness Task Force identify the leadership networks and the key action steps needed to energize eight business clusters for growth.
"These networks and action steps will form the heart of the tactical plan of action the task force will adopt at its final meeting Oct. 16, launching the regional vision and strategy that will shape the Research Triangle Region's competitive future," says Charles A. Hayes, president and CEO of Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP), which is facilitating the regional planning initiative.
RTI's latest research project builds on work in recent months to analyze a preliminary list of possible contenders for cluster development in the region, based on the region's research and development strengths in each sector and the job creation and sustainability potential each could expect in today's global marketplace.
Based on RTI's research, the task force agreed to pursue development of these eight areas:
- Pharmaceuticals or "therapeutics
- Biological agents and infectious diseases
- Advanced medical care
- Analytical instruments
- Pervasive computing
- Nanoscale technologies
- Informatics
- Agricultural biotechnology
Task force members also recommended that RTI consider how sensors, advanced materials and environmental sciences, areas of regional strength, can play a part in the region's focus.
RTI will convene panels of local leaders for each cluster to develop action items designed to promote economic growth and create jobs throughout the region. The information will be a major part of the overall regional economic strategy under development by the task force to compete with other regions globally in coming year.
