Southeastern Transformer Buys Shell Building for Expansion

DUNN, NC - Southeastern Transformer Company has purchased a 35,000-square-foot shell building in Dunn to expand its local manufacturing operations.

The company bought the building and five acres of land in Edgerton Industrial Park, Phase I from the Dunn Committee of 100 for $325,000. Company President Avery Corning also bought an additional 4.2 acres from industrial park partner Emmett Edgerton.

Founded in 1974, Southeastern Transformer repairs and remanufactures transformers and other electrical transmission equipment for utilities across the Carolinas, Virginia and parts of Georgia and Tennessee.

The company's pole transformer repair operation and paint shop will be moved to the new location, near the intersection of Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 301, Corning said. The company will also retain its existing operations on Edgerton Street in Dunn.

"We needed some room for future growth, and we wanted to stay local and convenient to our location," Corning said. "Thanks to the cooperation of the Harnett County Economic Development Commission, the Harnett Forward Together Committee and the Dunn Committee of 100, we were able to achieve those goals."

Five jobs will be created initially by the move, and Southeastern Transformer will invest $750,000 in the new building, he said.

"This is a good deal for Dunn and a good deal for the county," Harnett County Economic Development Director Lee Anne Nance said. "We have filled one of our available buildings and will allow a home-grown businesses to continue to flourish."

The Dunn Committee of 100 built the precast concrete shell building in 1993 to spur economic development in the region. A number of companies have looked at the building over the years before eventually deciding to locate elsewhere in Dunn, Committee President Abe Elmore said. "Our mission is to create jobs, and we accomplished what we set out to do with the building," Elmore said. "We're delighted to have a buyer for the building, and we look forward to working with Southeastern Transformer and help them keep growing."
