Inspire Pharmaceuticals Named Best Workplace for Scientists

Research Triangle Region, N.C. - Scientists named Inspire Pharmaceuticals the best place to work in a recent survey by The Scientist magazine.

In its "Best Places to Work in Industry 2003" survey, The Scientist asked respondents to evaluate their own workplaces and identify company characteristics they consider important. Their responses to 46 positive statements were evaluated and overall rankings were determined based on the average score per company on the 15 factors rated most important.

Inspire took top honors in the Top Ten Overall and Top Ten Small Companies (less than 500 employees) categories.

"Even in the competitive biotech environment of North Carolina," The Scientist says, "Inspire Pharmaceuticals, the number one ranked small company for scientists, understands the importance of maintaining a positive work environment."

"Management wants everyone to be comfortable here," Inspire senior researcher Bill Eckert tells the magazine. Company president Greg Mossingtherm adds, "We've focused on creating a team environment that results in rapid decision making and our employees feeling like they are a major part of everything we do."

Responses from 1,400 scientists working in life sciences companies in the United States, Canada and western Europe revealed that ethical standards are among the most important workplace issues for scientists. Six of the top 10 factors they identified relate to integrity and work ethic, three of the top 10 relate to training. Only one mentions pay as a significant issue.

Survey respondents named these key criteria for workplace satisfaction:
  • Maintaining industry business standards
  • Understanding the company's mission
  • Keeping promises
  • Company recognizes performance improvements
  • Researcher feels proud of company products
  • Inclusion in decisions that directly affect the worker
