Biotechnology companies convene to examine industry issues at GeneSpace 2004

Research Triangle Park, N.C. -- Registration is under way for GeneSpace 2004, the second annual forum to be held Nov. 2 for life science companies and their construction and development partners to discuss the intricacies of building quality biomanufacturing facilities.

"Life sciences facilities have unique needs that must be considered and accommodated to ensure optimal manufacturing performance," says Debbie Lilly, vice president of client services for Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP), which is hosting the forum. The region expects a significant increase in such construction and expansion projects as emerging companies and industry newcomers bring online new health care products.

Biotechnology facilities are complex, heavily regulated and costly. Those involved in their construction must manage diverse requirements for physical and system needs, biosafety, permitting, zoning and flexible use.

"Our goal is to help the industry and construction service community - commercial developers, service providers, utilities and others - understand the range of issues so they'll be better prepared to build and operate these facilities," Lilly says. "This industry is a crucial part of our efforts to diversify our economy and we need to focus on ways to support this industry's growth."

GeneSpace 2004 brings together industry experts and leaders committed to helping the industry grow in North Carolina and the Research Triangle Region. They include:

  • Tony Laughrey, president & CEO of KBI BioPharma Inc., which develops biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes. Laughrey will discuss his company's experience retrofitting a former semiconductor plant in North Durham.

  • Dr. Charles Sanders, former chairman & CEO of Glaxo Inc., speaking on "Big Pharma and Biotech: Which One Would You Rather Be?" Sanders serves on the boards of several publicly traded companies, including Genentech.

  • Dr. Charles Hamner, president & CEO of Hamner Advisory Services and former president and CEO of the N.C. Biotechnology Center. Hamner will share information on the N.C. Life Science Development Corporation.

The event will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the EPA Building in Research Triangle Park. Registration is $75 until Oct. 22 and $100 after Oct. 22. Register online at www.rtrp.org/genespace2004 or contact Lilly with questions at (919) 840-7372.

RTRP is a public/private partnership that promotes economic development for the 13-county region of North Carolina comprising Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Orange, Person, Vance, Wake and Warren counties.
