STATIC CONTROL OPENING NEW IMAGING DISTRIBUTION CENTER

SANFORD, NC - Static Control Components Inc. announced today it will open a new worldwide distribution center Monday to handle products manufactured by its Imaging Supplies Division.

The division produces components sold to remanufacturers of laser printer toner cartridges and serves more than 12,000 customers worldwide, roughly half of them in the United States.

The 90,000-square-foot facility, formerly occupied by Eaton, is located on Lee Avenue in Sanford, across from Static Control's corporate headquarters. When it opens on Monday morning, the completely renovated building will house about 6,000 individual imaging products to be distributed by 90 current associates.

"This new facility will allow us to be much more efficient -- to serve our customers better and process a larger volume of orders," said Ed Swartz, the company president and chief operating officer.

"The new building was needed because we are at our absolute capacity in the current facility," he said. "By expanding into the new distribution center, we can grow our customer base with the same level of customer satisfaction we've had in the past."

Manufacturing manager Bill Manning believes the extra space is critical for the success of Static Control, largely because the company promises same-day shipping to customers.

Every order arriving during business hours are shipped before associates leave for the day, no matter how many orders are placed. That makes it important to have plenty of space to store inventory and an efficient way to move products into the center and out to customers.

"Same-day shipping was Ed Swartz's commitment on 'day one' to our customers," Manning said. "And it remains our commitment to customers today -- no matter what it takes."

And it will take plenty of effort this weekend for nearly 150 Static Control associates. At the close of business Friday -- about 10 p.m. after the day's orders are received and shipped -- the team will begin moving products from other buildings into the new distribution center.

The plan is to work through the weekend, so the new center is open for business by 6 a.m. on Monday.

Though it's a big change for Static Control, the company is used to change.

This effort comes on the heels of another expansion project. Just this summer, Static Control expanded its distribution center in Chula Vista, Calif. from about 50,000 to 80,000 square feet. That facility near San Diego receives products manufactured in Sanford and distributes them throughout the western United States.

And more change is coming. Next year, the company dedicated to vertical integration will bring two new technologies in house, adding 200 new associates to a team in Sanford that already numbers about 1,250.

Static Control Inc. operates through three distinct business units. The company's first enterprise has evolved into the ESD Products Division, now the world's largest manufacturer of static shielding and moisture barrier bags used to protect computer chips and other sensitive electronic components.

The Imaging Supplies Division provides more than 6,000 products to customers worldwide who recycle and remanufacture laser printer toner cartridges for resale. More than 12,000 customers rely on Static Control for toner and components.

Santronics Inc., youngest of the three business units, manufactures innovative electronic testing equipment -- including the company's patented AC voltage sensor, a safety device used to detect voltage from outside a power source.

In recent years, Static Control has received several accolades, including the 1998 Entrepreneurial Company of the Year Governor's Award, 1998 Governor's Award for World Trade Success, and the 2000 and 2002 Electronics Company of the Year by the North Carolina Electronics and Information Technologies Association.
