Research Universities

Duke University
Duke University and its precursors have been educating North Carolinians since 1838. Located in Durham, Duke has been regarded as one of the Research Triangle Region&rs quos most valuable assets. Duke is known for the quality of its faculty as well as its academic and research programs. However, Duke’s size enables it to offer the atmosphere of a small college with the educational resources of a major research university. Duke offers 50 undergraduate majors and 74 graduate or professional degrees in law, divinity, medicine an allied health, nursing, engineering, environmental studies and business. Duke’s Fuqua School of Business is considered one of the best in the nation.

Duke is recognized not only as a leader in higher education but as an internationally  known center for medicine. Its medical center features clinical and training programs as well as research programs. Many of Duke’s faculty members have been cited for excellence in teaching and providing outstanding published works and literary articles.

The gothic architecture of the campus lends an air of scholarly antiquity to Duke. However, its modern labs, faculty, relationship with the Research Triangle Park, and leading-edge research programs are all prime indicators that Duke is pointed toward the 22nd century.

North Carolina State University
North Carolina State University, the largest of the universities in the University of North Carolina system, is a national center for research, teaching and outreach in the sciences and technologies, in the humanities and social sciences, and in a wide range of professional programs.

Located in! the state’s capital of Raleigh, NC State was founded March 7, 1887, by the North Carolina General Assembly. N.C. State shares the distinctive character of land-grant universities nationwide: broad academic offerings, national and international partnerships, and large-scale public services, extension and research activities. The university is organized into ten colleges along with the Graduate School and the Division of Undergraduate Studies. The ten colleges include: Agriculture and Life Sciences, Design, Education, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Management, Natural Resources, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Textiles and Veterinary Medicine. Baccalaureate degrees are offered in 98 fields, master 's degrees in 100 fields, and doctoral degrees in 53 fields.

N.C. State ’s outreach and extension programs reach into every part of the state and cover everything from the more traditional engineering, agriculture and textiles extension programs to veterinary students helping injured animals or faculty members preserving the dialect of the Ocracoke Islanders.

Centennial Campus is North Carolina State University’s vision of the campus of the future – a “technopolis” ; of university, corporate and government R&D facilities and business incubators, with an exciting town center, executive conference center and hotel, upscale housing, and recreational amenities. This 1,334-acre site, adjacent to N.C. State’s main campus, is quickly emerging as the Research Triangle Region’s fastest growing development. There’s no other campus or research park like it in the country.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the nation’s first state university. Since its founding in 1793, UNC-CH has been nationally known for its achievements in teaching, research and public service. Carolina is located in the heart of the town of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America It’s a friendly town in the geographical center of North Carolina and is located in the western point of the Research Triangle.

Carolina offers academic programs leading to 42 bachelor’s, 76 master’s-level programs and 63 doctoral-level programs, as well as professional degrees in dentistry, education, government, information and library science, journalism and mass communication, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health and social work. Also within Chapel Hill is UNC-Hospitals, including North Carolina Memorial Hospital, the state’s principal referral, and diagnostic and treatment center.

Campbell University
Campbell University is a Baptist University affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Campbell 's present standing is among the state 's largest church-related senior universities and occupies an 850-acre campus in Buies Creek. James Archibald Campbell, a North Carolina preacher who believed that no student should be denied admission because of the lack of funds, founded it in January of 1887. Originally known as Buies Creek Academy, the school began with twenty-one students and has grown to over 6,841 today. In 1926, the school attained junior college status and changed its name from Buies Creek Academy to Campbell Junior College. In 1961, Campbell became a senior college. The name was changed to Campbell University on June 6,1979. Graduate programs were begun in 1977 with the Master of Education degree. The Master of Business Administration degree was added in 1978 and the Master of Science in Government was established in 1982. The Campbell University School of Law was founded in 1976, and the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business was begun in 1983. The Schools of Pharmacy and Education were established in 1985. The Divinity School was established in 1995.

Louisburg College
Louisburg College is the oldest chartered two-year, church-related (Methodist), co-educational college in the nation. It traces its heritage to the first charter of the Franklin Academy in 1787. The college evolved from Franklin Male Academy, Louisburg Female Academy and Louisburg Female College. At the beginning of the 20th century, the institution became known as Louisburg College. The College 's academic programs provide a variety of choices for the transfer and two-year student. Fields of study include Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Business Curricula, weekend/evening college and special programs. Roughly 502 students are currently attending Louisburg College. The college helps make the transition between high school and the senior institution of your choice. Being a student at Louisburg College, you will be better prepared to enter and succeed at a larger institution, and classes in your major will be smaller and taught by experienced professors.

Meredith College
Meredith College is a woman's liberal arts college located in Raleigh, NC on a 225-acre campus. Meredith is a place where diverse groups of women unite to learn and prepare for their futures. Meredith College was founded by Thomas Meredith when his idea in 1838 called for the establishment of a "female seminary of high order." This seminary was named the Baptist Female University, whose name was changed in 1909 to Meredith College. Meredith is the largest private four-year women 's college in the Southeast, and offers degrees at the bachelor and master level while serving 2,000 undergraduates and 152 graduates.

North Carolina Central University
North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is the nation 's first public liberal arts institution founded for African-Americans. The university has a strong liberal arts tradition with a commitment to diverse educational and cultural environment. NCCU was chartered in 1909 and opened its doors in 1910. NCCU is one of the 16 senior institutions comprising the University of North Carolina, the state 's tax-supported university system. NCCU serves its more than 5,441 undergraduate and graduate students through the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Law, and the School of Library and Information Sciences. In addition to its regular offerings, NCCU has a large selection of courses in the evening with a number of undergraduate and graduate degrees available to students who attend evening courses only. NCCU 's campus is more  than 100 acres, beautifully landscaped through sloping hills and green valleys. The buildings are a mixture of modern and modified Georgian structures.

Peace ! College
Peace College, a private college of liberal arts and sciences for women and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), was founded in 1857 by Presbyterian elder William Peace. Peace offers the Associate of Arts, Associate of Fine Arts in Music, Associate of Science, and the Bachelor of Arts degrees in Biology, Business Management, Communications, English, Human Resources, Leadership Studies, Liberal Studies, Music, Psychology, Spanish, and Visual Communications. Located on 8-acres of historic downtown Raleigh, Peace is situated in the State 's political, educational and cultural center that offers  many internship opportunities for young women. Currently, there are 699 students attending Peace College and is one of two women's colleges in the Southeast that offer both associate and baccalaureate degree programs. Peace College is a member of the Women 's College Coalition.

St. Augustine's College
St. Augustine's College is an undergraduate, co-educational, liberal arts institution, affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Founded in Raleigh in 1867 to educate free slaves, the mission of St. Augustine's College has grown with diversification of its once predominant African-American heritage to one that is multi-national and multi-racial. St. Augustine's College was first awarded its baccalaureate degrees in 1931.

Shaw University
A co-educational, church-related institution in Raleigh was founded in 1865 being the oldest historically black university in the South. Shaw is firmly committed to providing educational opportunities for all segments of society but has been a particular pacesetter in developing programs to serve the needs to Afro-Americans. Shaw University all levels of education including thirteen departments offering 29 majors leading to the bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree, three degree programs leading to the associate of arts degree, and one master 's degree program in divinity. The Center for Alternative Programs of Education (CAPE) allows students in nine cities across North Carolina the opportunity to pursue an academic degree through flexible course scheduling, independent study, and credit for prior learning experiences. Shaw University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate, bachelor 's and master 's degrees. Three of its academic programs have national accreditation including the Shaw Divinity School, the kinesiotherapy program, and the teacher education program. Approximately 1,589 students from the United States, the Caribbean, African countries and the Middle East attend Shaw University.

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary was founded in May of 1950, by vote of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Convention purchased the campus of Wake Forest College (now Wake Forest University) in Wake Forest, NC recognizing it as the most beautiful place in the South. This campus original heritage dates back to 1832 when the property was originally obtained by the Baptists of North Carolina in order to build a college for educating ministers. The Seminary is known for the beautiful Wake Forest Baptist Church, organized in 1835, which sits within the campus enclosure. The Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and also the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This Seminary theological training and educational preparation for ministry is one of the best in the nation and provides studies ranging from undergraduate to post-graduate degrees. The school offers the Master of Divinity degree as a first professional  degree for Christian ministers while also offering several related Master of Arts programs. The Bachelor of Arts is available to undergraduates entering into Biblical and ministerial studies. Post-graduate degrees are also offered in the Doctor of Ministry program as well as two advanced research degrees in Master of Theology and Doctor of Philosophy. Extension centers serve students in Charlotte, NC; Norfolk, VA; and Augusta, GA. The Seminary is ranked as the sixth largest seminary in the nation with an enrollment of 1,725.
