Susan brings a broad mix of skills and personal traits that make her an ideal candidate to serve as the Director of Membership Development and Engagement for the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC). Susan was the Executive Director at Futures for Kids (F4K), and built the organization from a start-up to a sustainable organization through prospecting and relationship building over her 10 year tenure. Together with her team, F4K enabled 300,000 students across the state to create career plans and connect with mentors. A collaborative problem solver, Susan created employer and educator advisory groups as means to continuously seek feedback to improve programs and services. She presented at statewide events held by the NC Chamber of Commerce and the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Under her leadership, F4K achieved several recognitions, including being named the NC Technology Association’s Nonprofit of the Year and being endorsed by both the NC Chamber and NC State Board of Education.
Throughout her career, Susan has built a reputation for building and maintaining strong relationships. As a marketing strategist at IBM, Susan created successful events across the country that connected potential clients with IBM product representatives. This required learning about the local technology culture in different cities to understand which groups to partner with and collaborating internally to ensure technical experts attended events. In Wake County, Susan is a go-to team member for analyzing complex issues and distilling them into straightforward recommendations. Her analysis of the environmental and economic impacts around Wake County agriculture led to increased soil and water conservation practices.
Susan holds a Masters in Public Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. She is technically skilled in analyzing economic development issues, including labor markets and cluster development, and has 15+ years of experience in business development. Through her work in rural and urban North Carolina and overseas in South Korea, Susan is highly competent in working with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
