A great place to catch a world class show—or launch a world class idea.

From tobacco and textiles to tech in four short decades, Durham County has evolved into an exceptional center for technology. Leading industry clusters here include the life sciences, advanced healthcare, information technology, software, electronics, financial services and transportation components.

Durham is home to approximately 95 percent of the 170 companies located in Research Triangle Park and has emerged as the center of North Carolina's burgeoning biotechnology industry. More than 40 percent of the state's biotechnology companies are located in Durham.

Also known as the City of Medicine, Durham is well-deserving of the nickname, as life science and healthcare-related industries employ nearly 30 percent of workers in the county. Discoveries made in Durham contribute significantly to the health of humankind globally. The county has three major hospitals including the nationally ranked Duke University Medical Center. It is also a leading center of the agriculture biotechnology industry in the US, with leaders such as BASF, Bayer CropScience, Syngenta, and Monsanto having significant research centers in the community.

Downtown Durham has soared in popularity as a hub for startup companies recently, with over 50 startups employing 500 people in the Central Business District. Most of these startups are in the software and IT sectors and richly complement larger downtown technology companies such as McKinney, Measurement Inc, Intersouth Partners (VC Firm), Compuware, Duke Clinical Research Institute, The Art Institute and HTC.

Cultural events showcase Durham's rich character and diversity. Spectators can enjoy performances from the American Dance Festival, as well as touring groups performing at Carolina Theatre and Duke University's Page Auditorium. In 2008, Durham opened a new 2,800-seat performing arts center that has greatly expanded the city's growing cultural arts offerings to include Broadway productions and live performances. The Durham Performing Arts Center is the ninth most successful performing arts center in the US and 11th globally, according to Pollster Magazine.
