(Durham, NC) – Durham Technical Community College donated medical supplies to UNC Health and Duke Health Wednesday to support the hospitals’ efforts pertaining to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The supplies consisted of bulk quantities of gowns, masks, protective eyewear, disposable gloves, and hand sanitizer, amounting in more than 3,000 individual supplies. Supplies came from various areas of the Health and Wellness department: Anesthesia Technology, Associate Degree Nursing, Medical Assisting, Nurse Aide, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Pharmacy Technology, Practical Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, and Surgical Technology.

“The faculty were able to respond quickly, pulling supplies and doing inventory in less than two days’ time. It was an incredible effort,” Melissa Oakley Ockert, Dean of Health and Wellness, said.

UNC Health and Duke Health are long-time community partners with Durham Tech. The institutions provide students with opportunities for clinical, donate items for faculty to use in their instruction, and employ Durham Tech graduates.

“UNC Health and Duke Health are valuable clinical partners for us, so the Health and Wellness programs felt compelled to give back and support them during this difficult time to provide these needed supplies. We wish our colleagues at UNC and Duke our very best during this time,” Ockert said. Durham Tech offers several programs in its Health and Wellness department.
