Amazon opens Garner fulfillment center, will employ 3,000. Here’s who else is hiring.

Date Published:

Amazon officially opened its massive fulfillment center in Garner last week, as the online shopping giant slowly ramps up what will become the largest private employer in the town.

Amazon will eventually employ around 3,000 employees at the distribution center, making it one of the biggest hirers in the area during the pandemic. The company said the first item received by the building was a 750-piece puzzle on Aug. 2, and it shipped its first order on Aug. 9: an all-purpose squeegee.

Since the coronavirus pandemic made its way into North Carolina, many businesses have had to close due to stay-at-home orders.

The N.C. Department of Employment Security said as of Aug. 7, more than 1.2 million North Carolinians have applied for unemployment benefits since the pandemic began in March.

But a number of companies and medical centers need employees now.

Amazon is hiring on a rolling basis, and the company pays a minimum of $15 an hour. Workers will also have access to Amazon’s Career Choice Program, which partners with local colleges and universities to offer training opportunities for associates to gain new skills to either further their career at Amazon or help them find work somewhere else.
